🔥Suneung proctors will check every pair of glasses this year
With the Suneung (수능, the national college entrance exam) on November 19, the Education Ministry says proctors will visually inspect the glasses of every test-taker who wears them, before each session. They tested radio-frequency detectors but dropped them for this year because conditions at exam venues caused detection errors. It follows two cases this month. At the University of Seoul's essay exam a proctor noticed unusually thick glasses on a candidate applying to the AI department, where 120 people were competing for five places. They were smart glasses with AI functions, and the candidate is now barred from applying there for three years. At Yonsei, someone wore ordinary glasses for the pre-exam check and switched to smart ones after the test started. I wear glasses myself and can already picture the line at the door. A proctor squinting at frames is a very analogue answer to a very digital problem, and the Yonsei case shows people will simply swap after the check, which is presumably why it is now every session. Still, with five weeks left it is probably the only thing they can do.
