🔥Jang Hyuk as Yeon Gaesomun, and the teaser doesn't pretend he's a simple hero
A new character teaser for "The Great King Munmu" came out today, and it's Jang Hyuk as Yeon Gaesomun.

Some context for anyone who doesn't know the period. The drama is directed by Kim Yeong Jo, who did "Hwarang," and it follows how Silla, the smallest of the three kingdoms, ended up beating Goguryeo, Baekje and Tang China to unify the peninsula. Yeon Gaesomun is the general who controlled Goguryeo's military, and he is one of those historical figures Koreans have never agreed on. He took power by killing the king, and he is also the man who stood against Tang. What I like is that the teaser leans straight into that. It opens on him staring at a bloodstained sword while a voice calls him "a traitor who killed the king and seized Goguryeo." Then we get Yang Hyun Min as Emperor Taizong of Tang, Li Shimin, and Yeon Gaesomun answering with "I will tear apart the skies of Tang and extinguish its sun." It ends with him driving the sword into the snow and saying he will awaken the spirit of Goguryeo with its tip. It's a little funny that a drama named after a Silla king is promoting itself with the Goguryeo general first. But it makes sense. If the antagonist side has this much weight, Munmu's story gets more interesting, not less. And Jang Hyuk in a sageuk is a safe bet after Chuno. It premieres November 14 at 9:20pm KST. For those who watch historical dramas: do you prefer when they pick a side, or when someone like Yeon Gaesomun is allowed to stay messy?
