🔥sungsimdang's pregnant free pass is a whole debate in korea again

7JunseoAm2026.10.17 16:00👁 1387💬 28♥ 59

if you've never been, sungsimdang is the bakery in daejeon people literally take the train for. the line is part of the trip. and if you're pregnant, you plus one person skip it completely. pregnancy badge, walk in. it already blew up back in july and now it's back. this week it's someone saying they waited 80 minutes and watched pregnant people go straight in, more than 20 within 5 minutes by their count. local news ran a segment on the "fairness" angle, and a TV announcer showing off her free-pass bread tray last week didn't exactly calm anyone down. korean comments are mostly on the bakery's side though: "jealous? then get pregnant lol" "it's the owner's call. if it bugs you, don't go" "pregnant people crave everything, cut them some slack" "make a soldier pass too and there's zero controversy" my mom says when she was pregnant with me in toronto, the big perk was someone giving up a bus seat, sometimes. so this reads as kind of sweet to me. a bakery deciding pregnant women shouldn't stand in a line for over an hour isn't a scandal, it's a nice policy from a place that can afford to be nice. the one fair point is people worrying it'll get abused. even then, if someone fakes a pregnancy for a bag of 튀김소보로 (their famous fried soboro bread), that's a them problem.

Busan subway keeps the pink pregnancy seats empty most of the time, so this tracks. Reckon the bakery's just taking it one step further.

if skipping the line was a cheat code it would be ruined in a week. the line is the product

7Gaeun2026.10.17

Everyone's arguing about the badge and nobody's asking why one bakery has a line long enough to need a rule. That's the bigger story.

if the line is the product, skipping it is kind of skipping the experience. you walk in, grab bread, and miss the whole trip part

7Geonwoo2026.10.18

A bakery line that needs a badge system, a rulebook and a comment section arguing about it. At that point the bread is the least interesting part.

we skipped sungsimdang on our last trip to the in-laws purely because of the line. if i'd known the cheat code...

80 minutes for bread. the pregnant people aren't the problem here

it's not just bread though 😭 it's sungsimdang bread

7orbit_kid2026.10.17

devil's advocate: 20 people in 5 minutes is a lot. the people in line aren't crazy for asking how they check

from what's been posted it's the pregnancy badge. faking that is a lot of commitment for a 튀김소보로

OK but 20 in 5 minutes just means the badge works, no? that's a lot of pregnant people in Daejeon on a Saturday 😭 and I still want that fried soboro

20 in 5 minutes is one person's count from inside a queue. It isn't data, so the complaint and the defence are both guessing.

20 people in 5 minutes means somebody at the door is checking badges while 80 people stare at them. I'd be tense too, not even mad

7paperlantern2026.10.17

in the US the perk is strangers asking when you're due and touching your stomach without asking

7hanriver.walk2026.10.17

uk version: someone offers you a seat on the tube and then you both pretend it never happened

Strangers touching your belly is the real price of admission in a lot of places. A bread pass is a fair trade

7Dahye2026.10.17

Not sure a priority pass fixes anything, but 80 minutes of watching people walk past would make me cranky too.

7cloudberry2026.10.17

My in-laws would say the line is the whole point and skipping it spoils the story. They'd also let a pregnant woman go first, so, mixed.

A bakery with a line long enough to need a rulebook has already won, mate. The rule is just the receipt.

↳
8Taeho2026.10.18

Whatever side you pick, the rule only works because most people in line accept it. Once enough of them stop, the line becomes the story and the bread is an afterthought.

7Dahye2026.10.17

Feels like a second window would fix more than a debate. One for the pass, one for the line, and nobody has to watch anybody walk past.

8Dabin2026.10.18

Fine, I'd walk past the line with a badge and enjoy it. But 80 minutes of watching people go in would also make me cranky 😭

7Soomin2026.10.18

In the Philippines pregnant women get priority lanes at banks and malls and nobody blinks. The bread just makes the line visible.

7Dahye2026.10.18

Ok but how do they pick who goes first when five pregnant people show up at once 😭
