๐Ÿ”ฅbugaksan's last closed trail opened this morning after 59 years

7velvetcrow2026.10.17 04:11๐Ÿ‘ 1861๐Ÿ’ฌ 22โ™ฅ 112

the last closed stretch of bugaksan, the mountain right behind cheong wa dae, opened today at 9am. 1.32km on the southwest side, four new viewpoints over gyeongbokgung, inwangsan and namsan, and now every trail on the mountain is open 24 hours. it was shut after the 1968 raid on the presidential compound and there's still a pine along the trail with the bullet holes in it.

a palace view and bullet holes on the same walk is the most seoul thing i've read all week

1.32km lunch walk, sure. then you're sweating through a shirt at your 2pm standup

1.32km and four viewpoints. so the pitch is stairs, but with history

7orbit_kid2026.10.17

casually is a strong word. most people stop, stare at the pine, take one photo and then walk fast

6moss.and.rain2026.10.17

wait is there a rule about touching it or is that just her being careful? asking for a friend who would absolutely touch it

7Soomin2026.10.17

knees will forgive you at the top if there's something hot in a thermos. that's my whole negotiation strategy

24 hours is the part that got me. Sunrise over the palace from up there would be something, even if the Bugaksan stairs are no joke.

sunrise over the palace sounds great, as long as there's a snack stop near the exit. I plan routes around that

7orbit_kid2026.10.17

there goes my last excuse for not hiking on weekends

โ†ณ
7velvetcrowOP2026.10.17

you can go at 2am now. no excuses left

The tree is known as the 1.21 pine, after January 21, the date of the raid. The first sections opened in 2020 and 2022, so this completes the mountain.

wait so people just casually hike past bullet holes there? that's wild

6Bingsu_Bandit2026.10.17

not sold. 59 years closed and the big upgrade is longer opening hours for stairs. my knees say no

The stairs are the price of the view, but with 24 hours you can pick your hour. Up at dawn, breakfast on the way down, knees survive.

7cloudberry2026.10.17

my mother-in-law just asked if the pine is safe to touch. told her no, now she's planning the trip

stairs, but with history is honestly a solid tourism slogan.

Walking past a bullet-hole pine at sunrise is the kind of field trip that would get a permission slip signed in ten seconds.
