🔥Korea is remaking Doctor-X with Kim Ji Won, and the nickname alone is a good sign

8TaehoAm2026.10.05 09:26👁 2287💬 77♥ 58

SBS has released new stills for its Korean version of "Doctor X," the long-running Japanese medical series. It premieres October 9 at 9:50pm KST.

Kim Ji Won plays Gye Soo Jung, a genius surgeon who gets sent by a staffing agency to Guseo University Hospital, which is full of corruption and politics. Inside the OR she is untouchable. Outside it, she ignores the rules, ignores the hierarchy, and says exactly what she thinks to people above her. The staff call her the "crazy Gye of the operating room." Her surname sounds like 개 (gae), dog, so it's basically "the mad dog of the OR." I love it when a Korean adaptation finds a joke that only works in Korean. The rest of the cast reads well too. Lee Jung Eun is the loud, money-driven head of the staffing agency, who is actually a sharp strategist, and the two of them bicker like an aunt and niece. Son Hyun Joo is the hospital director who made deals with the corrupt side to keep the place running while still wanting to be a real doctor. Kim Woo Seok is the kind, ambitious intern who becomes her mentee. Speaking as a nurse, a surgeon who refuses the hierarchy is the purest fantasy television can offer. The real wards don't look like that. But Korea also already has a very strong tradition of hospital dramas, from the warm side (Hospital Playlist) to the political side, so I'm curious which one this ends up closer to. Japanese medical shows tend to be more episodic and theatrical, while Korean ones like to build up long relationship arcs. Has anyone here seen the Japanese original? Is a straight remake a good idea, or should they change her a lot for Korean viewers?

Kim Ji Won after Queen of Tears playing a mad dog surgeon who doesn't care about anyone is exactly the career move I wanted. October 9 is in my calendar

"Mad dog of the OR" is the energy I need on Monday mornings. Meanwhile I can't even tell my manager his meeting could have been an email

5Aurelien2026.10.05

Agree. The Japanese version got away with it because it was almost a comedy. If the Korean one plays her straight and serious, an untouchable hero gets boring by episode 4

6Ioana2026.10.05

Unpopular take: the rude genius who's always right gets old fast. Those shows work when the hero gets punished sometimes. Let her be wrong at least once or it's just a power fantasy

6Ioana2026.10.06

Please no. Let one Korean drama have a female lead with zero romance

5Chaeyun2026.10.05

Saw some of the Japanese one years ago and the whole charm was her saying "I never fail" with a dead straight face. If the Korean version adds a big romance arc I'm out. Let her be weird and right.

Counterpoint, a slow burn with the intern would be the most Korean thing ever and you'd watch every episode while saying you hate it

6Jiyul2026.10.05

My only question is the OST. A cold genius surgeon needs a theme that plays every time she walks into the OR. If they give her a soft ballad instead I'm filing a complaint

↳
5retro_ballad2026.10.06

A theme every time she walks in is non-negotiable. 2nd gen dramas understood this

↳
5lyric.thief2026.10.07

"Eye of the tiger" when she walks in. I'll accept nothing less

5Kasia2026.10.05

5nunchi_zero2026.10.06

I can't even tell a barista my order is wrong. The mad dog lifestyle is a dream

↳

Same. My courage stays inside the drama

↳
6kkt.882026.10.07

If a Korean office worker tried mad dog mode on Monday, Tuesday would be their farewell lunch

↳
5tiny.tigress2026.10.07

Telling your manager the meeting could've been an email is the real medical drama. High risk surgery

↳
5Noor2026.10.07

Same. My big rebellion is turning my camera off

↳
5cryingagain2026.10.07

I'm crying, mad dog energy on a Monday is exactly what I need too

5Sanne2026.10.05

Does anyone know the episode count? The Japanese one ran for ages, curious if they're planning seasons here too or just one and done

↳
6Lukas932026.10.06

Seasons are still rare in Korea. I'd bet on one season and wait and see

↳
8TaehoOP2026.10.06

No episode count in the SBS material I saw, sorry. I'd love seasons, but Korean dramas rarely commit to that

5Valen2026.10.05

the mad dog nickname has me crying. Korean writers really looked at a surname and said let's make it a whole personality

6Ioana2026.10.05

Unpopular take: the rude genius who's always right gets old fast. Those shows work when the hero gets punished sometimes. Let her be wrong at least once or it's just a power fantasy

↳
7Sebin2026.10.06

Always right in surgery and wrong about people could fix it. Genius in the OR, mess everywhere else

↳
8TaehoOP2026.10.06

That's my worry too. The Japanese one was almost a comedy, and this one looks more serious in the stills

↳
6ice_cold_takes2026.10.06

The power fantasy is the point though. People watch it because their real boss is the problem

↳
7Sebin2026.10.06

Being wrong once in a while would make the "never fail" moments land harder. Hope the writers know that

5Elena.v2026.10.06

October 9 is in my calendar too, so ready

↳
5Mariela2026.10.06

Queen of Tears to mad dog surgeon is such a fun jump

6Seoa2026.10.06

The Japanese original is huge in Japan, her "I never fail" (watashi, shippai shinai node) became a famous line. Curious how the Korean version handles it

↳
6Lukas932026.10.07

Did the Japanese one ever get a remake somewhere else, or is Korea the first?

↳
4Hiro_K2026.10.07

The line is so famous in Japan that people use it as a joke at work. Curious whether Korea gives her a new catchphrase or keeps that one

6Jaehee2026.10.06

As someone scared of hospitals, a surgeon who never fails is the only kind of doctor show I can watch

↳
5Bea2026.10.07

a doctor who never fails is the only reason I'd watch a hospital drama too

6ppalli_ppalli2026.10.06

미친 계 → 미친 개. Love when a pun teaches me two words at once

↳
6Tomas2026.10.06

Two words for the price of one. Korean is a buy-one-get-one language

6Zeynep2026.10.06

The stills look great. Very clean styling for a medical drama, she looks sharp

↳
5Jules2026.10.07

Agree. Scrubs that sharp are a statement. This woman irons

4Hyunseo2026.10.06

lol true the nickname is elite

4Elif2026.10.06

Will it be on any streaming platform internationally?

↳
6hanbyeol2026.10.07

The post doesn't say. SBS dramas often show up on a streaming service abroad, but I'd wait for an official announcement before buying anything

6Priya.s2026.10.06

Lee Jung Eun bickering with her like an aunt is the casting I didn't know I needed

6hanbyeol2026.10.06

The 계 / 개 pun is very natural in Korean. Calling someone a "mad dog" can be half insult, half compliment for a person who ignores the rules

5Ploy2026.10.06

Congrats on the premiere! Oct 9!!

5Tenzin2026.10.06

Vocab: 수술실 (susulsil) = operating room. 미친 계 of the 수술실 would be a great opening line

5Elena.v2026.10.06

Kim Woo Seok as the kind intern... I'm already worried about him. She's going to destroy him emotionally

↳
5Mariela2026.10.07

She'll destroy him and he'll thank her for it. I already know

7Siwoo2026.10.06

A surgeon who never fails and leaves on time. That's not Korean, that's Norwegian *grabs popcorn*

5jaywalker2026.10.06

Remakes of Japanese shows in Korea have a mixed record. The nickname is good, but I've been burned before

↳
5Aurelien2026.10.07

Fair worry. Remakes usually fail when they copy the tone. If they make it Korean hospital politics first, it has a chance

6Minh2026.10.07

Never failing in the OR is like a goalkeeper with zero conceded. Great until the one match you lose

4Thandi2026.10.07

congrats Kim Ji Won!! new role era

5Gyuwon2026.10.07

She never fails. I fail to wake up on time. We are not the same

6Dain2026.10.07

The stills have such clean colors. Medical dramas always look a bit grey and this one doesn't

4Kyungmin2026.10.07

what time is that in Europe?

↳
8TaehoOP2026.10.07

9:50pm KST is 2:50pm in Central Europe this week. A long lunch break, basically

7Dahye2026.10.07

Kim Ji Won with sharp short lines and a cold face is the casting I didn't know I needed

5Camila2026.10.07

The surgeon is a real cut above the rest. Sorry

6kkt.882026.10.07

As someone who's been to a Korean university hospital: the hierarchy part is very real. A surgeon ignoring it is pure fantasy, agreed

6Omar2026.10.07

A surgeon who ignores hierarchy in a Korean hospital. Finally a fantasy drama with no dragons

6Tomas2026.10.07

She never fails, but this remake will need a lot of patients

6Jiyul2026.10.07

A surgeon who walks in like that needs a theme song. If the OST doesn't have a dramatic brass intro I'll be disappointed

7Junseo2026.10.07

the 미친 계 nickname is already showing up in korean comment sections before the premiere, that's usually a good sign

5Valen2026.10.07

I'm crying because Kim Ji Won with a cold face is the best thing to happen to my Thursdays

6Yoonseo2026.10.07

Vocab: 파견 (pyeongyeon) = dispatch, being sent by an agency. That's her whole setup, she's a 파견 surgeon

6Mateo2026.10.07

Random fact: the Japanese Doctor-X ran for multiple seasons plus a movie, so Korea is taking on a really big name

7Nari2026.10.07

Watching this with my Busan in-laws on Thursday, they love Kim Ji Won. They'll be yelling at the hospital director the whole time

7Gaeun2026.10.07

The stills have her in such clean white and navy. Sharp collar, hair pulled back. Wardrobe is doing a lot of the "untouchable" work already
