people keep scooping up park acorns for dotorimuk, so the park now begs them to leave some for the squirrels

7SoominAm2026.10.14 15:20๐Ÿ‘ 1345๐Ÿ’ฌ 16โ™ฅ 46

A man at Seoul Children's Grand Park told reporters he was gathering acorns to take to the mill for dotorimuk (acorn jelly), while the park plays a "please leave acorns for the wildlife" announcement every 10 minutes. In Quezon City the only acorns I've ever seen came as a pack of acorn powder, so the squirrels and I have never been in competition.

Picking fruit in a city park can be a โ‚ฉ50,000 fine and taking from a forest without permission can be prosecuted, so my vote is on the squirrels' side: the powder makes perfectly good muk.

that's the part english coverage skips. a lot of these folks have been foraging for decades and don't think of it as stealing. the rules just caught up

7Lumi_Haze2026.10.14

Banners and a ten-minute announcement is the politest crackdown I've ever heard of.

7cloudberry2026.10.14

in fairness my mother-in-law in Daegu has made muk from hand-picked acorns her whole life. it's a whole generation thing, not just greed

Banners and a recorded announcement every ten minutes, and someone still walks in with a bag. Respect the dedication, not the technique.

7Nari2026.10.14

Squirrels also don't show up with a tote bag and a phone flashlight. The squirrel is a professional.

korean comments are pretty one-sided on this. top ones say it's mostly older people going off-trail at night with phone flashlights, and "just don't eat dotorimuk, there's plenty of other food" lol

"it's fun, is that not allowed?" is going straight into my vocabulary for every bad decision this year

That's fair, and I get the tradition. It's more the backpack-full-at-night part that loses me.

Back in Australia picking up acorns would get you a confused look at most. Here it's a seasonal crackdown with banners. Love it honestly.

the ten-minute announcement is the squirrels' only lobbyist

7Dahye2026.10.14

squirrel lobbyist is great ๐Ÿ˜„ honest lobbying, no bribes except acorns

7nightbus_92026.10.14

squirrels forget where they bury half of them anyway. the man is basically recycling.

The squirrel buries it and forgets. The man takes it home and makes jelly. Only one of them has a business plan.

7Nari2026.10.15

A recorded "please leave acorns" loop every ten minutes would have me emptying my own pockets by minute thirty. Guilt as public infrastructure.
