🔥Paradise Lost looks great in stills. The review says otherwise

This one still has been stuck in my head all day. A young man half in shadow by a cramped little bathroom mirror, nothing really happening, and it still feels wrong in a way I can't shake. That's Yeon Sang Ho's new film, 실낙원 (Paradise Lost). A mum lost her son in a camp bus disappearance nine years ago, has been spending time with an AI version of him as a little kid, and then the real son walks back in as a grown man. She doesn't feel joy, she feels like a stranger has turned up. It was invited to the gala section at BIFF here in Busan, and to Toronto too, so I was properly keen. Then I read Tenasia's review and it's pretty rough. They give Kim Hyun Joo everything, calling it a "연기 차력쇼" (an acting strongman show), but they say the emotional jumps aren't earned, the story circles the same feeling for most of its 101 minutes and the ending is rushed. They were also hard on Bae Hyun Sung, saying even his everyday lines sound like stage dialogue. Yeon himself said at the press conference it started from a story his mum wrote in a notebook, which is a lovely origin. And it was shot in only 14 sessions, more of a side project between his big films. I'm still going on the 21st. A great performance in a messy film is worth a ticket to me, and if the AI-son idea works even half as well as that still, I'll be happy.

yeon sang ho doing a small quiet one after train to busan is already a swerve. a rushed ending would be a shame

bad review plus a great still is exactly how i end up buying the ticket

'Acting strongman show' is the best insult I've read all week. I'd sit through 101 minutes just to see what that looks like.

ok so it's a babysitter app but the kid is basically a ghost. who looked at that and said yes, download

7NariOP2026.10.13

Same. If I hate it I'll come back and complain properly, promise.

Yeon Sang Ho's small films always split people more than his big ones. The Face did well last year, so expectations were higher this time. 101 minutes feeling long is not a great sign though.

Good point on the small films. I'd still go in with low expectations and let the lead surprise me, that's usually the best way to watch one.

that still is very good. the review makes me want it more, honestly.

a good still is a poster, not a film. I've fallen for worse trailers and regretted it for two hours

7nightbus_92026.10.13

a film that runs on one actress carrying it is still a film i'd watch. kim hyun joo has never been the problem in anything

6moss.and.rain2026.10.13

wait is the AI kid thing like a game or a chatbot? it sounds terrifying

From the review it's a program called '낙원의 아이들' where she spends time with a recreated child version of him. Not much more than that so far.

'Acting strongman show' is the kind of bad review that sells tickets by accident. Free marketing for the lead.

Using 'acting strongman show' on the next group presentation I grade.

7Geonwoo2026.10.13

101 minutes of a mum and an AI kid and a rushed ending. Black Mirror would have done the same thing in 45 minutes and kept the cold feeling.

7Gaeun2026.10.13

Black Mirror gets its 45 minutes, sure. But a mother alone with a stranger doesn't need to be efficient, the slow part can be the point.

7marigold.mp32026.10.13

a mother watching a stranger walk in as her son. that cold feeling in the still is enough for me to buy a ticket despite the review

7hanriver.walk2026.10.13

Nine years looking for a missing child is a heavy way to start a film. I'd go with zero expectations and a very large tea.

↳
6moss.and.rain2026.10.13

large tea noted. do I bring a second person to hold my sleeve? asking for a coward

8Dabin2026.10.13

the face in the bathroom mirror is giving me chills and i haven't even seen it. why do i do this to myself

My mother-in-law would treat the review as a trailer. She'd go opening night just to prove it wrong.

7Minjae2026.10.13

Shot in fourteen sessions from a story his mum wrote in a notebook. I'd rather see that than a polished one. Enjoy the 21st.

6Oatmilk_Otto2026.10.13

A still can be a whole film, a review usually can't. I'll wait for the streaming date and decide on my own couch.

7Gaeun2026.10.13

great still and a bad review usually means the lighting department had the best week of anyone on set
