๐Ÿ”ฅ๋ชจ๋””์Šˆ๋จธ: why Korean snacks keep turning into other snacks

7MinjaeAm2026.10.11 10:48๐Ÿ‘ 1542๐Ÿ’ฌ 14โ™ฅ 59

Here's a word I learned this week while staring at a bag of ๋„ˆ๊ตฌ๋ง. ๋ชจ๋””์Šˆ๋จธ (modisumer) is modify + consumer. It's what Korean media call people who don't eat a product the way it was sold. They mix two things together, add a seasoning, swap the sauce, post the recipe, and if it goes viral enough, the company eventually turns that hack into a real product.

The example everyone's talking about: people on social media started putting the seasoning powder from ๋„ˆ๊ตฌ๋ฆฌ (Neoguri, the spicy seafood ramyeon) into a bag of ์–‘ํŒŒ๋ง (Onion Rings snack) and shaking it. Nongshim made it official, and now ๋„ˆ๊ตฌ๋ง is on the shelf as its own snack. It doesn't stop there. For Shin Ramyun's 40th anniversary, Nongshim and chef Edward Lee developed two recipes, cheese & doenjang and seafood & fish cake, and they're letting people vote on which one gets released at the end of next month. Daesang put out a stir-fried kkakdugi meant to be thrown into fried rice and rice balls, and KFC Korea now sells seasonings you shake on your own chicken. How you'd use it: 'I'm a total ๋ชจ๋””์Šˆ๋จธ, I put cheese in everything', or about a product, 'this started as a ๋ชจ๋””์Šˆ๋จธ recipe'. Where it came from: the word was built the same way as a lot of Korean marketing terms, two English words mashed into one, and it's been around food news for years, but it's everywhere right now because these hacks keep becoming actual products. I like it. Some of my favourite Korean food memories are dorm-room combinations nobody would sell. Now there's a word for being that guy, and apparently a chance the company copies you.

Neoguri powder on onion rings actually makes sense. Seafood and onion is a classic pairing.

WAIT so if my weird ramen combo goes viral nongshim might sell it?? i'm posting tonight

Onion rings are basically a blank page and Neoguri powder is a flavor with opinions. Of course it works.

the kids I teach do this at the convenience store hot water machine. three snacks, one cup, and a loud argument about the ratio

Step one: post recipe. Step two: company sells it back to you. Capitalism speedrun.

cheese & doenjang shin ramyun has my vote already

7Haneul2026.10.11

all my ramen combos are crimes and i'm begging nongshim to never scale them ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿœ

7Dahye2026.10.11

my whole ramen skill is cheese on top and an egg cracked in. if that ever becomes a product I'm retiring

7Soomin2026.10.11

Filipino spaghetti is the same story really, sweet sauce and hotdog slices that every family decided was correct. No company had to approve it.

7Nari2026.10.11

Every kid I teach has a 'my way is better' for instant noodles and will fight you over it. Nongshim's R&D is basically just reading those arguments.

Free R&D with extra steps. Companies just wait for the group chat to do the work.
