🔥Seoul just beat Tokyo as the world's best big city, and the safety bit is why

7NariAm2026.10.10 18:30👁 2419💬 20♥ 70

Condé Nast Traveler's readers put Seoul at number one for big cities this year, up from fifth, with Tokyo dropping from first to second. Jongno 3-ga, the area around the Ikseon-dong hanok alleys, also got called the coolest neighbourhood in the world. On the news, one tourist said she loved seeing young Koreans out on the streets, and one jogger said he left his stuff behind for an hour while running and it was all still there when he got back. That last one is the thing I tell every friend who visits me. The first week I lived in Korea I watched a girl leave her laptop and phone on a café table and go to the toilet for ten minutes. In Sydney I'd have been watching that table for her the whole time. Here nobody even looked. I've since done it myself, which my mum back home does not need to know. Korean comments were mostly happy but a bit surprised. One person living in the US said even New York doesn't compare, because in American cities the busy parts are just pockets, while all of Seoul feels like a big city. Another listed river, mountains, skyscrapers, hanok and palaces in one place, plus no pickpockets. A few just went "huh? really?". It's funny, Koreans love to complain about Seoul being crowded and expensive, and fair enough, it is. But when I go back to Sydney the thing I miss isn't the food first. It's being able to forget my bag for a minute and not have my heart drop.

In Manila a jacket left on a chair at the mall is a donation. Here people hold your spot with a jacket, I'm still processing

Tokyo dropping to second with its lost wallets still getting returned is a harsh judge. Seoul must have had better cafés to leave a laptop in.

Ikseon-dong at night is the coolest neighbourhood, no argument from me

Safety is also why concert queues here are so chill. People leave their spot markers and nobody moves them.

phone stolen in TWO capitals?? that's either bad luck or a hobby 😭

the laptop on the cafe table thing is the #1 culture shock every foreigner posts lol

In Germany you can leave a laptop in some places, but never a bike. Seoul is the first city where I stopped checking my bag every five minutes.

Meanwhile my phone got stolen in two European capitals. Seoul wins by default

back home I wouldn't leave my slippers outside the mosque for ten minutes and you guys leave laptops 😭😭 seoul is a different planet

It's a reader vote, so closer to a popularity contest than a safety audit. But 5th to 1st in a year is a big jump for a vote

8Taeho2026.10.10

Reader polls mostly measure how people remember a holiday. Still, I'd take 'my laptop was where I left it' over any trophy

7Junseo2026.10.10

the 'huh? really?' comments are the most korean part of this. complain about the city every day, then someone ranks it first and suddenly they distrust the survey

7Haneul2026.10.11

the jogger who left his stuff for an hour has better data than any survey 😭🏃

mexico city here: i leave my phone on a table for 30 seconds and start praying 😭 so yes seoul wins

Houston here, I lock my car in my own driveway and still feel optimistic about it. A jacket holding a seat would get a very confused look back home.

Folded — lots of readers reacted 🤔 Hmm to this one. Tap to read

Congrats Seoul, but the jogger thing: is the trust real, or is it just that CCTV is everywhere? I'd be too anxious to run if my bag wasn't in sight.

Left a laptop on a London cafe table for ten minutes in my head just now. Gone in the daydream too.
