๐Ÿ”ฅtourists, empty cups, and why Korea has so few trash bins

6kkt.88Am2026.10.09 14:35๐Ÿ‘ 1795๐Ÿ’ฌ 17โ™ฅ 58

A whole row of empty cups lined up on a wall shelf by a walking path. The man who lives at the bottom of that path spotted it coming home with his dog, and he blamed tourists.

The Korean comments were brutal. "They only know how to eat, not how to throw away." "They see one or two cups there and decide it's the collection point." My favorite: "At this point the guy who left one empty cup looks pretty to me." Here's the context that makes this happen everywhere in Seoul. We have very few public trash bins on the street. A lot of them disappeared years ago after the pay-per-bag trash system came in, because people started dumping household garbage in them. So if you buy a drink on a walk, you either carry it until you find a convenience store or a subway station, or you do what these people did. I'm a carry-it-back person, mostly because I grew up being yelled at by my mom. When I visited Japan I was surprised it's the same there, almost no bins, and people just take their trash home without thinking about it. In Korea we're halfway: no bins, but not everyone got the carry-it-home memo. Honestly one cup is an accident, two is a sign, and thirty is a museum. I'd rather the city put back a few bins near walking paths than keep pretending everyone will behave.

Japan is the same, almost no bins and people carry it home. took me years to notice how strange that is for visitors

I once carried a cup through three subway stations because I was scared of the sorting rules. by the end we were very close

in Bulgaria the windowsill is the unofficial bin. I've seen cups up there older than me

once there's one cup, the rest follow. broken windows theory in bubble tea form

exactly what the Korean comments said. one is an accident, two is a sign

the first cup is the crime. everyone after that is just following the style guide

in the US there's a bin every 20 steps and people still miss. no country wins this

the one with the straw still in it is the real villain

straw still in it is a personality, not a mistake. a whole row of cups on a wall is basically a tiny gallery called 'not my problem'

I carry my empty cup around for two hours and drop it in the first bin I see like I won something

carrying it for two hours is the Seoul sport. the convenience store bin is the finish line and the cashier knows exactly why you walked in

6Yoonseo2026.10.09

today's word: ์“ฐ๋ ˆ๊ธฐํ†ต (sseuregitong), trash can. also the thing you will walk 20 minutes looking for in Seoul

6Yoonseo2026.10.09

extra word: ๋ถ„๋ฆฌ์ˆ˜๊ฑฐ (bunri-sugeo) is recycling sorting day. in apartment complexes it's a weekly event and pajamas are the dress code

I'd be the tourist who carries the cup for two hours, gives up, and leaves it on a wall out of pure exhaustion. ์ฃ„์†กํ•ฉ๋‹ˆ๋‹ค in advance

not convinced it's all tourists. a row of cups lined up neatly on a shelf looks like somebody who walks that path every day

fair point, locals use that path too and I wouldn't bet it's all tourists either. the Korean commenters just grabbed the easiest villain
