🔥A ramyeon room where nobody charges you for the ramyeon

7DahyeAm2026.10.05 18:43👁 1774💬 50♥ 78

This popped up on a Korean board today and it kind of made my morning.

It's an unmanned ramyeon spot inside a local welfare center, and you don't pay for the ramyeon. It was set up with 고향사랑기부금, money from Korea's hometown donation program where people donate to a local town. The idea is that anyone in the neighborhood can come in, eat, hang out with other people, and even talk through their worries with someone. The one comment under it called it a 라면사랑방, basically a ramyeon living room, and I can't think of a better name. I've eaten so many cups of convenience store ramyeon alone by the window in Seoul late at night. Happy, but alone. This feels like the cozy version of that. Would you actually sit down and eat with strangers, or grab your cup and go?

I'd sit down. The hardest part of living alone here isn't cooking, it's eating every meal facing a wall. A free ramyeon and someone to talk to is a really good idea

Places like this usually run on trust plus a few volunteers or staff from the center nearby. The post doesn't say how this one handles it though

사랑방 is a nice word to learn: the room in a traditional house where guests and neighbors gathered. So 라면사랑방 makes a lot of sense

6probably_napping2026.10.05

Me: grabs cup, sits in the corner, says nothing, comes back every day for a month. Then one day says hi. That's how I'd make friends there

Older people living alone eating together... this is the version that gets me most

I'd sit down, but I'd need the stranger to talk first

Facing a wall is exactly it. I didn't realize how much I missed eating across from someone until I visited family

5Mariela2026.10.06

"eating every meal facing a wall" made me tear up a little, too real

↳
7Sebin2026.10.06

This is the real point. The ramyeon is the excuse, the company is the program

↳

Same. Eating alone is fun until suddenly it isn't

the 사랑방 explanation is so nice, thank you

Adding 사랑방 to my notes. 사랑 = love, 방 = room, so literally a love room? Sounds very different in English lol

↳
5Tenzin2026.10.06

Oh I didn't know that! Even better

↳
6hanbyeol2026.10.06

Fun fact, the 사랑 in 사랑방 actually comes from 舍廊 (a guest hall), not 사랑 as in love. But most people hear "love room" too, so the name works twice

the month-long silent regular is a real type and I respect them

6Jaehee2026.10.06

Day 31 "hi" is huge character development

7Minjae2026.10.06

This is exactly how it would go and it's beautiful

4메아리2026.10.06

좋은 동네네요 (nice neighborhood)

5Jiseon2026.10.06

this is so wholesome, I hope more towns copy it

Hot take: this is a better use of hometown donation money than half the return gifts people pick

6devils_avocado2026.10.06

Respectfully, I'd grab and go. Not everyone wants to talk about their worries with strangers. Nice that it's an option though

↳

Both can be true. Grab and go is fine, and having the option to sit is the whole point for the people who need it

7Geonwoo2026.10.06

So it's a PC bang without the PCs and with emotional support. I'd go

5retro_ballad2026.10.06

Me eating cup noodles alone at 1am in 2010 would've loved this

6Seoa2026.10.06

Japan has kodomo shokudo, community cafeterias for kids, with a similar idea. Food is the easiest way to get people into the same room

Free ramyeon and someone to talk to at 11pm would be dangerous for me. I'd never leave

5lyric.thief2026.10.07

"Hotel California" but it's a ramyeon room. You can check out any time, but you'll stay for the second cup

6Lukas932026.10.06

How do they stop people from just taking boxes of it home? Honest question

Trust works more often than people expect. And if someone takes a box home, maybe they needed a box

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.07

fair question. the post doesn't say, but since it's inside a welfare center I'd guess staff are around

6kkt.882026.10.06

Office worker here. I think this matters most for older people living alone. Eating alone every single day wears you down

5kimbap_kid2026.10.06

ramyeon living room is the best name for anything I've heard this year

6busan_or_bust2026.10.06

Where is this? Would love to visit and bring some donations

↳
5jaywalker2026.10.07

The post doesn't name the town, sadly. Would also like to know

5curiosa_br2026.10.06

is it only for people who live in that neighborhood?

↳
5Layla2026.10.07

Good question. Probably meant for locals, but I can't imagine them turning away a hungry stranger

5Gyuwon2026.10.06

A free ramyeon room with a counselor. Korea invented therapy with soup

6pixel_gremlin2026.10.06

A free spawn point with food and NPCs who listen. Best map in Korea

5Ayşe2026.10.07

This is the kind of news I want more of. Small, kind, and useful

5dadjoke_dk2026.10.07

My wife says I'd go there and talk about the ramyeon for 40 minutes. She's right

6Olu2026.10.07

I'd sit down for sure. In Lagos people talk to strangers at food spots anyway, the silence would be the weird part for me

6velvetrabbit2026.10.07

Reminds me of late-night convenience store scenes in old dramas, except now there's someone to talk to

6Jiyul2026.10.07

This feels like the kind place in a slice-of-life drama where the lonely main character finally meets someone over a cup of noodles

6Yoonseo2026.10.07

Vocab: 무인 (muin) = unmanned. You'll see 무인 on ice cream shops, photo booths, laundromats all over Korea. This is the warmest 무인 I've seen

4Doha2026.10.07

Hometown donation money going to a room where people eat together is such a good use of it. I hope it gets more funding
