🔥There's a fried snack in Jeolla that half the locals have apparently never heard of

7DahyeAm2026.10.05 16:45👁 1924💬 49♥ 62

Found this on a Korean board tonight and I can't stop looking at it. The post was just titled "the fried thing only Jeolla people know" with one photo.

It's 오리날개튀김, fried duck wings, and they look like little lollipops with the bone sticking out as a handle. The comments turned into the cutest local argument. One person said they're a Mokpo native and had no idea what this was. Then another Mokpo native showed up like "you've never been to Yongdang Banjeom??" and said they buy these for every friend who visits and take them to Pyeonghwa Square with beer. Someone who moved to Seoul for college said nobody back home ever mentioned duck wings once. Another said they used to see them at the five-day markets (오일장) as a kid, so maybe it's more of a market snack than one famous shop. The reviews were split too. Lots of "how do you not know this, it's so good," one person who tried it once and said chicken is better, and one who thought it was 상추튀김 (lettuce twigim), which is a totally different regional thing. All my trips have been Seoul-heavy and now I want one just to eat my way through Jeolla markets. Would you try the duck wings, or is fried chicken undefeated for you?

Duck wings at the market? Sounds like a quack-tastic idea. I'll see myself out

5Ayşe2026.10.05

They look like little drumstick lollipops, so cute. I'd 100% try them with a beer. Fried chicken is great but I've had it a thousand times, this I've never seen

3lowkeylurker2026.10.05

lol same, never heard of it and now I'm hungry

6Dain2026.10.05

Vietnam has fried duck wings at street stalls and they're always gone first. No surprise the locals who know, know

6busan_or_bust2026.10.05

Adding Yongdang Banjeom and the five-day markets to my list. Does anyone know which days the Mokpo markets run? Five-day markets confuse me

5Sanne2026.10.05

Are they spicy or just plain fried?

6hanbyeol2026.10.06

Market twigim like this is usually just salty batter. Sauce is more of a chicken shop thing

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.06

From the photo they look plain fried, no sauce. The post didn't say, so I'd guess you just eat them with beer

Every time someone posts a regional snack my Seoul-only itinerary gets more embarrassing. Next trip is going south, I promise

6Lukas932026.10.05

One Mokpo native never heard of it, another says it's famous. So is it a Jeolla thing or one shop's thing? Feels like the title is a bit of a stretch

↳
7Sebin2026.10.06

Both can be true. Famous to people who go to that one place, unknown to everyone else. That's most local food

↳
6Lukas932026.10.06

Ok, "one shop and some markets" is a more honest title. Still want to eat them

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.06

Fair, the title was the Korean poster's. The comments made it sound more like a market snack than a whole-Jeolla thing

Duck wings are fine but the person who thought it was 상추튀김 is the real story. Totally different thing from Gwangju, and still better than both

↳
6devils_avocado2026.10.06

Better than both is a bold claim from someone who hates mint chocolate

↳

Lettuce twigim isn't fried lettuce. It's twigim you wrap in lettuce. People get confused and that's on them

3lowkeylurker2026.10.05

lol same, never heard of it and now I'm hungry

Five-day markets go by the date, not the weekday. Each town has a pair of numbers, like the 2nd and 7th, 12th, 17th and so on. Check the local one before going

↳
6busan_or_bust2026.10.06

Ohh dates, not weekdays. That's why it confused me. Thank you

5kimbap_kid2026.10.05

A snack you can hold by the bone like a lollipop is genius engineering. No greasy fingers, more beer hand

6kkt.882026.10.05

Lived in Korea my whole life and this is my first time seeing it. Jeolla keeps some of its best food to itself, that's not new

Fried chicken is undefeated in my house but duck has more flavour, so on paper these should win. Someone please do a blind taste test and report back

↳
6Jaehee2026.10.06

I volunteer for the taste test. No credentials, only hunger

↳
50xDEAD2026.10.06

Blind test results will be: duck wins, chicken wins, nobody remembers because there was beer

6Dain2026.10.05

6Hajun2026.10.05

The one person who tried it and said chicken is better deserves respect. Takes guts to say that in a thread full of Mokpo people

↳
5nunchi_zero2026.10.06

Saying chicken is better in a Mokpo thread is the bravest thing I've seen online

7Nari2026.10.05

This happens in Busan too, every neighbourhood has a 'famous' thing the next neighbourhood never heard of. Markets keep the weird stuff alive

5tteok_and_roll2026.10.05

↳
4Eero2026.10.06

quack-tastic is the exact pun I would've made. Respect

↳
7Siwoo2026.10.06

*grabs popcorn and a duck wing*

5Ayşe2026.10.05

5retro_ballad2026.10.06

I want to be the friend who visits and gets taken to the square with beer

↳
5Elena.v2026.10.07

Being the friend who gets taken to the square with beer is the dream. I want that friendship too

7Geonwoo2026.10.06

Duck wings and beer at Pyeonghwa Square sounds like a whole evening plan

4메아리2026.10.06

용당반점 가봐야겠네요 (gotta try that place)

6ppalli_ppalli2026.10.06

오일장 (oiljang) = five-day market. 오 five, 일 day, 장 market. Finally a word that means exactly what it says

6Seoa2026.10.06

Nagoya's local thing is chicken wings, tebasaki, so I fully understand regional wing pride

5Kasia2026.10.06

I'd try it, but I'd still order chicken on the side, just in case

5gochujang_gang2026.10.06

Going to try these at home with duck wings from the asian market. Wish me luck

5tiny.tigress2026.10.06

Chicken undefeated. Sorry duck

↳
5lyric.thief2026.10.07

"Chicken, you're simply the best" but somewhere a duck is crying

5Noor2026.10.06

the Mokpo native who never heard of it getting called out by another Mokpo native is the best part

↳
5Lucia2026.10.07

getting exposed by your own hometown in the comments... I'm crying, that's the scariest thing online

8Dabin2026.10.06

the lollipop bone handle omg it's so cute i want ten

5Gyuwon2026.10.06

Mokpo natives fighting in the comments about a duck wing is my favorite genre of internet

6pixel_gremlin2026.10.07

Jeolla really has hidden recipes like a secret boss. Only unlocked after visiting the five-day market

5Ignacia2026.10.07

Duck wings: the snack that left half of Mokpo duck-founded

6hazel_n_honey2026.10.07

The bone handle is so practical. Every fried thing should come with a built-in handle

5dadjoke_dk2026.10.07

I'd try it, then tell my wife chicken is better, then secretly buy ten more
