GS25's buldak omelette gimbap sold 500,000 rolls in a month

Convenience store gimbap is having a moment in Korea again. GS25 says its gimbap sales from October 1 to 15 were up 36.2% from last year, and it's mostly down to three rolls.

The one in the headlines is the 명란통계란김밥 (pollock roe and whole egg gimbap, 3,900 won), a collab with 식물원김밥, a gimbap shop that went viral after celebrities visited it on YouTube. Black rice, a thick rolled omelette in the middle and whole pollock roe. 500 of them went up for pre-order on the GS25 app on the 13th and they were gone in 10 minutes. The second collab, 날치알묵은지김밥 (flying fish roe with aged kimchi, 3,700 won), sold out its pre-order in an hour and passed 100,000 sold in its first week in stores. Then there's the 불닭치즈오믈렛김밥 (buldak cheese omelette gimbap, 3,500 won), based on the buldak omelette that tourists keep filming in Myeongdong. Buldak sauce rice, sausage, cheese and an egg omelette. 500,000 sold in a month and number one in the category three weeks in a row. My honest verdict, from someone who has only eaten these through other people's phone screens: the myeongran one is the real deal. Salty roe, soft egg and nutty black rice is a combo that already works at home. If you can't find roe, a fat rolled omelette with a little gochujang mayo gets you halfway there. The buldak one is where I get suspicious. Spicy rice plus cheese plus sausage plus omelette is a lot of soft things in one roll, and cheese at fridge temperature is not melty cheese, it's an eraser. I would microwave it for 10 seconds and I know that's a crime against gimbap. Half a million people can't all be wrong though, so it stays on my list, right after the myeongran.

someone should send the mother-in-law a roll and film the verdict. content writes itself

10 seconds, not 30. I'm not a monster.

My mother-in-law in Daegu would never buy convenience store gimbap on principle. I'm fairly sure she'd still eat the whole myeongran one if it was on the table

500 rolls in ten minutes. I can't get the app to load that fast, let alone beat other people to it.

Your mother-in-law is the only reviewer in this thread I trust. I'd pay to hear her verdict on the 3,900 won one.

the buldak omelette is in literally every myeongdong vlog i've watched. 3,500 won for it in gimbap form is not bad at all

the black rice one looks way better than the buldak one tbh. cheese in cold gimbap has never worked for me

7Dahye2026.10.17

500 rolls gone in 10 minutes means I would never get one. Pre-ordering convenience store gimbap is a competitive sport now

In Busan I've watched people refresh an app at 7:59 for a bakery drop. It's a sport.

microwaving gimbap is a crime but buying three of them at 2am is self care. no notes

mothers-in-law refusing convenience store gimbap on principle and then finishing yours is basically a national tradition. the 식물원김밥 name probably gives her cover, it sounds like a real shop.

3,900 won for roe and a whole egg is cheaper than the sad sandwich I buy on weekdays. No complaints from me.

3,900 won for roe and a whole egg is cheaper than my school-gate coffee, so I'm not arguing. I just can't beat 500 other people to a pre-order app.

7hanriver.walk2026.10.17

Skeptical here. Up 36% in two weeks, mostly from three rolls, sounds like people buying the hype more than the gimbap. Ask me again in a month.

↳
6Fizzwick2026.10.17

36% up from three rolls means three rolls are doing all the work. the rest of the shelf is on the bench

↳
7cloudberry2026.10.17

My husband bought three of the black rice ones last week for the train and didn't share. That's not hype, that's a man defending his lunch.

↳
7Nari2026.10.17

Fair, ask me in a month. Right now my local one has an empty shelf where the roll should be, so something is happening.

6tteok_n_roll2026.10.17

500 gone in 10 minutes, someone tell me that's not just resellers

↳
7snowpea2026.10.17

reseller thing crossed my mind too, but 3,500 won profit per roll isn't worth the effort. i think it's just a lot of people with a finger on the app at the same time

6soju_sundays2026.10.17

Sold out in ten minutes tells me about the app, not the gimbap. Show me a Tuesday afternoon number.

↳
7Dahye2026.10.17

Could be the app, sure, but I can't find a roll at my local GS25 on a Tuesday afternoon either. So maybe both.
