🔥Fall in southern Korea apparently smells like osmanthus right now

7DahyeAm2026.10.05 09:34👁 2480💬 54♥ 63

Someone on a Korean board posted their local park yesterday (Oct 4) with the 금목서 (geummokseo, fragrant osmanthus) finally blooming, and now I'm sitting in Houston being jealous of a smell I can't even reach.

The poster said the scent is soft right now, but after a rain it spreads everywhere and you basically get marinated in it. The comments were all people from Daegu and Suncheon going "the whole street smells like this today." One person said their old apartment complex has a tree next to every building so they just keep the windows open 24/7. And then my favorite one: someone who lived in Suncheon for 29 years said they have never once noticed it, even though apparently it was blooming at their own university. Some people are just immune I guess. Every trip I've done has been spring or winter, so I completely missed this. Now I want an October trip just to walk around at night and smell trees. Has anyone actually been in Korea when these bloom? Is it really that strong, or is it a "you notice it once and then never again" thing?

Seoul gets a few trees too, near some old apartment complexes. You smell it before you see it, then spend five minutes looking for which bush it is. Rain the next day ruins it every year

6probably_napping2026.10.05

The 29-years-in-Suncheon person is me with every nice thing around me. Lived next to a bakery for two years and only noticed when it closed

7Sebin2026.10.07

Exactly. The best part of visiting is noticing what locals stopped noticing years ago

7Siwoo2026.10.05

Meanwhile October here smells like wet leaves and a neighbour's wood stove. Getting marinated by a tree sounds like an upgrade. Is it sweet like perfume or more fruity?

5Chaeyun2026.10.06

Smell is the one thing dramas can never show you. Now I'm curious

7Nari2026.10.05

Busan here, it's very real. You walk past one tree and suddenly the whole block smells like apricot candy. Then a week later it's gone and you're sad for no reason. Come mid October, not late

6busan_or_bust2026.10.06

mid October, adding a second note

↳

Is the timing the same in Seoul or later up north?

↳

Apricot candy!! now I want it even more. Mid October noted

6Seoa2026.10.05

Same tree is kinmokusei in Japan and Osaka smells like it right now too. It's strong for about a week, then one rain knocks the tiny orange flowers onto the sidewalk. Worth timing a trip for

Kinmokusei week is my favorite week of the year in Tokyo too. You walk around with your nose up like a dog

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.06

I didn't know it's the same tree in Japan! kinmokusei sounds so pretty

↳
6Seoa2026.10.06

the orange flowers on the sidewalk after rain are pretty too, just a bit sad

It's fruity, like apricot jam with a bit of flower. Not perfume-strong unless you're right under it. Adding mid October to my trip notes now, thanks for ruining my spring plans

5Aino2026.10.06

Finland in October smells like rain and regret. I want to be marinated by a tree

↳
7Siwoo2026.10.06

Apricot jam with a bit of flower, ok I'm sold. The wood stove remains undefeated though

Seoul has more of them than people think, they're just mixed into hedges. You follow your nose

↳
5nunchi_zero2026.10.06

spending five minutes looking for which bush it is is extremely me

6probably_napping2026.10.05

↳
6Jaehee2026.10.06

Noticing the bakery only when it closed is painfully relatable

↳
7Sebin2026.10.06

Living next to something makes you stop noticing it. Visitors see what locals don't, that's the trade

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.06

the bakery one hurt

5Sanne2026.10.06

Does it bloom in Jeju too?

↳
5jaywalker2026.10.07

Can't say for sure, but I'd be surprised if a warm island skipped it. Would love someone from Jeju to confirm

↳
7Nari2026.10.08

I'd guess yes but I've only smelled it in Busan. Someone from Jeju please settle it

5Noor2026.10.06

immune to an entire tree for 29 years is a talent

↳
5Layla2026.10.06

29 years of immunity to a whole tree is a superpower nobody asked for

6Dain2026.10.06

Hanoi has one like this in autumn, hoa sữa. People either love it or get headaches

5Fernanda_m2026.10.06

Osmanthus perfumes are a thing and they're lovely. Now I want the real tree

↳
5Fernanda_m2026.10.07

Osmanthus perfumes are some of my favorites. Soft and fruity, not heavy. Now I want to compare with the real tree

7Minjae2026.10.06

A reason to visit in October I didn't know I needed

5aaaahelsinki2026.10.06

*inhales through my screen*

5Mariela2026.10.06

Planning a trip around a smell is the most romantic thing I've read today

↳
5Lucia2026.10.07

planning a trip around a smell... I'm crying, that's poetry

5Ayşe2026.10.06

Getting marinated in a smell after rain is such a good phrase

6Zeynep2026.10.06

The photos are so soft, those orange flowers are tiny

osmanthus tea exists right? Can I drink my way into this experience

↳

Osmanthus tea exists and it's great. Also osmanthus jelly if you find it. Drinkable marination

6ppalli_ppalli2026.10.06

금목서 = golden 목서 (osmanthus). I think there's a white one too, 은목서?

↳
6hanbyeol2026.10.07

Yes, 은목서 is the white one. Usually a little later than 금목서 and the smell is softer, at least where I've seen it

5Chaeyun2026.10.06

Smell is the one thing dramas can never show you. Now I'm curious

5dadjoke_dk2026.10.06

My wife wants an October trip now. I blame this thread and the apricot candy comment

6kkt.882026.10.06

Seoul office worker confirming the hedge thing. You smell it near the bus stop and then never find the tree

5Elena.v2026.10.07

Getting marinated by a tree after the rain is the most romantic sentence anyone has written on this board

↳
6Hajun2026.10.07

Most romantic sentence on the board is about being seasoned by a plant. This place is wonderful

6Lukas932026.10.07

Is it actually strong enough to notice walking by, or is this one of those things the internet hypes? Asking before I plan a whole trip

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.07

from what people here are saying, yes, at least for that one week when you walk near a tree

↳
7Nari2026.10.07

You'll notice it. Right next to a tree it's strong, a street away it's just a hint of something sweet

↳
7DahyeOP2026.10.07

Fair question. I haven't smelled it myself yet, so I'm going on the comments, but everyone from down south says you can't miss it

5lyric.thief2026.10.07

"Smells like teen spirit" was wrong all along. It smells like osmanthus

4Niamh2026.10.07

planning an October trip just for this now. love this board

6b1ue_hour2026.10.08

Late afternoon light on those tiny orange flowers is my favorite thing to photograph in October. The smell doesn't fit in the photo though
