Winter's New Balance shoot and the shoe that carries it

Winter is New Balance's new face and the first campaign is out. The formula is almost nothing: a cropped white logo tee, black track pants with white piping, long messy hair. Take the shoes away and it's gym clothes.

The ABZORB 983 is what turns it into a look. Chunky, blue grey, with that oval cushion unit and the wavy lines along the sole, basically a 2000s running shoe made more sculptural. Put a slim sneaker under those wide track pants and the whole outfit collapses. This one gives it weight at the bottom, so the short top and the loose trousers look intentional instead of lazy.

She also wears the 1890 and the 880R in the shoot, but the 983 is the one that photographs. I like it on her because the rest stays plain, no logo overload, no styling tricks. Would I wear the track pants to teach? No. The shoes, probably yes, with straight jeans and a grey knit. That's my real test for a chunky shoe and this one passes it.
