๐Ÿ”ฅpizza on rice cake made it to CU

Pizza seolgi has been the thing in Korea this fall: baekseolgi, the plain white steamed rice cake, used like a pizza base with toppings on top. People have been doing "tteok pilgrimages" (๋–ก์ง€์ˆœ๋ก€, a pun on the bakery pilgrimage idea) to rice cake shops for it, and SNS mentions reportedly went from under 100 in April to over 10,000 in September. Even Pizza Hut jumped in. Now CU has its own, but on jeolpyeon, the flat chewy rice cake, instead of seolgi. Tomato sauce, mozzarella, pepperoni, corn and olives, 3,800 won. My honest verdict before tasting it: the swap is clever, because seolgi is soft and crumbly and jeolpyeon actually has the chew a crust should have. Cold mozzarella from a convenience store fridge is the part I don't trust. It's the same move CU made last year with its Dubai chewy rice cake, which has sold about 2.8 million. I'd still try a rice cake shop version first.

Jeolpyeon with pepperoni looks like a canapรฉ from a very confused wedding.

3,800 won is fair if it's a decent size. The photos don't really tell you.

Texas would riot over a rice cake crust. I'd still buy one at 3,800 won just to see what happens to the mozzarella.

Rice cake crust means the pizza finally fights back when you bite it. I'm in.

I'll try it, but corn AND olives on rice cake sounds like the toppings were decided by committee.

Fusion crime level: low. Rice cake as a crust actually makes sense to me.

Agreed. Seolgi always seemed too soft to hold sauce.

Corn on pizza is still a family argument in my house. Olives I'll allow.

My mother-in-law would eat it and then ask why there's no kimchi on it.

3,800 won is inside my usual convenience store budget so I'd buy one just to see if the mozzarella survives. Snack gambling is a hobby.

Cheaper than a bad slice in London and probably chewier. Pizza purists can take it up with the rice cake.
