๐Ÿ”ฅtuna kimchi jjigae

Sour kimchi fried in oil until it turns orange, then a whole can of tuna, oil and all. The broth comes out sharp, a little greasy, properly spicy, and the tuna goes soft and flaky in it. Two bowls of rice disappear without me noticing.

Keeping the tuna oil in is the move. People drain it and then wonder why it tastes flat.

Tuna kimchi jjigae is the one soup my in-laws make without a recipe and without admitting it came from a can.

Ramyeon sari in tuna jjigae is where I tap out. At that point it's instant noodles with commitments.

7Geonwoo2026.10.12

ramyeon sari at the end or it doesn't count

Frying sour kimchi in oil sounds amazing right up until the smell moves into the curtains. Open window or full acceptance, what's the move?

Agreed. That's round two.

Not convinced without tofu. The tuna oil is smart, but I want something soft in there besides rice.

Tofu is a fair add, it soaks up the broth. It also waters down that sharp tuna-oil edge though, so it's a trade rather than an upgrade.

Canned tuna jjigae is a student-dorm classic because the can is cheap and keeps forever. The sour kimchi matters more than the tuna though. With fresh kimchi it's just a decent soup.

7Nari2026.10.12

sour kimchi from the back of the fridge is the only reason to make kimchi jjigae. fresh kimchi just sits there and does nothing

8Taeho2026.10.12

Dorm version of this used the cheapest tuna with all the oil, and the flat smelled of it for two days. Still worth it. Just warn whoever shares your wall first.

Warning the neighbours is the right rule. I usually apologise with a bowl.

Open window, and eat it fast so the smell isn't wasted. Full acceptance is a day-two thing.

Open window, lost anyway. The smell lives in my jacket now.

Sounds great and I'd need bingsu right after. Spicy plus grease begs for something cold.

7hanriver.walk2026.10.12

In-laws' house rule: the sour kimchi gets used first, fresh waits its turn. Learned that one the hard way.
