๐ฅThe soup Koreans eat on their birthday (and after having a baby)
The first time my birthday landed on a trip to Korea, my friend there asked me in the morning if I'd had my seaweed soup yet. I had not. I had a granola bar. She looked at me like I'd skipped my own party.

Miyeokguk is a clear soup of seaweed simmered in sesame oil with garlic and usually beef, seasoned with soy sauce. It's soft and a little slippery, salty in a very calm way, and it's the thing Korean moms make for your birthday breakfast. It's also what women traditionally eat for weeks after giving birth, and the birthday bowl is partly about remembering that your mom ate it for you. That part got me a little. The funny flip side is that students avoid it before big exams, because seaweed is slippery and nobody wants to slip on a test. I now make it every birthday and I still can't make it taste like my friend's mom's.
