🔥what goes on the ancestral table now, apparently

6probably_nappingAm2026.10.09 23:23👁 2089💬 12♥ 69

Jesa is the memorial rite where families set out a table of food for their ancestors. Usually that means fruit, jeon, rice cakes, fish, everything in its proper place. Some families have updated the menu.

This one has burgers, fries and a soda. The Korean comments split into two camps: "they're offering what grandpa actually ate when he was alive, what's the problem" versus "fine, but Lotteria instead of Burger King is too far." The second camp is my favorite.

Another family went full sashimi, and the caption says the theme of the day was conquering Japan. If my descendants ever do this for me, I want gimbap and a nap pillow on the table. They'll know why.

my grandma would haunt us for a burger. the fries I'd allow. the soda is where I draw the line

Lotteria vs Burger King at an ancestral table is a rivalry I didn't know I needed

both can be true: the point is feeding the ancestors, and the ancestors had opinions. I'd only fight about the soda brand

the Lotteria vs Burger King split is peak family drama and I'm unreasonably moved. my table would be rye bread and salty liquorice, descendants have been warned

isn't the point of jesa that it follows tradition? burgers feel like a joke at the ancestors' expense

my family does a mix now. the traditional stuff in front, grandma's favorite snacks in the back. nobody complains

Same here. Traditional stuff in front, favorites at the back. My lola would've wanted pancit on the table and nobody would argue.

rules differ a lot by family. plenty of people say the ancestors would rather have what they liked than what's 'correct'

a burger on the table is a bit of a beef with tradition. I'll see myself out

the lotteria slander in the comments is sending me

The sashimi one made me laugh, but the burger table is the sweeter one. Grandpa actually ate it, which is more than you can say for half the fruit pyramids.
