Cheonggyecheon, then and now

5NoorAm2026.10.08 14:24👁 826💬 12♥ 47

These concrete pillars are what was left of the old Cheonggye elevated highway, photographed in December 2006.

And this is Cheonggyecheon at night now.

A city taking down a highway to give people a stream is wild to me. I'm planning my first Korea trip and this is on the list already. Walking by water at night is exactly my speed: free, no reservation, and zero chance of embarrassing myself at a club.

bridge exits are a good call. is it lit up all the way along or just the first stretch? every blog says something different

I'm crying, they turned a highway into a stream and I can't even keep one plant alive

go at night, the lights on the water do all the work

6Lukas932026.10.08

pretty, but it's basically a very long fountain with ambition

adding it to my list too. how long is the walk end to end?

청계천 is where a lot of office workers around there eat lunch on a nice day. bring kimbap and sit by the water

a long fountain with ambition is also how I'd describe myself

Seoul office worker here, 'long fountain with ambition' is about right and we still walk it after dinner anyway. bring kimbap

no exact number from me, but there are bridges and ways out all along it, so you can bail whenever. don't plan it as one big walk

5Aino2026.10.08

walk it end to end, bail at the first bridge when your feet complain, still count it as a win

a highway turned into a stream is the kind of city decision I wish I saw more. Dubai would have built the stream and then air-conditioned it

unpopular take: the best part is that it doesn't charge admission. half the must-see lists in any city want your wallet first
