Dalgona straight off the stove, no shape, just a warm lump in a plastic bag

5KasiaAm2026.10.06 17:12👁 1588💬 33♥ 46

Everyone knows dalgona from the Squid Game shapes, but a Korean board posted the version people remember from elementary school and I had no idea this existed.

The sellers in front of schools made it fresh, and instead of pressing a shape or flattening it, they just put the whole puffy lump into a plastic bag and handed it over. People call it 달고나빵 (dalgona-ppang, dalgona bread). The poster said if you eat it before it sets it's soft, warm and so good, and if you carry it home it goes rock hard, but it's still good. It looks like a giant caramel cloud and I want one immediately. My school-gate snack was a sad pretzel stick. Did you have a snack like this outside your school growing up?

Real ones know the soft lump beats the shape game. The shapes were for stress, this was for happiness

an hour-long name argument is exactly the content I'm here for

From what the post says it's the same thing, just not pressed flat. Report back if it works!

I'm crying, why did nobody tell me dalgona came as a cloud

Shapes for stress, lump for happiness is the best summary I've read. Converted

Dalgona said no shape, only vibes. Respect

Some regions call it 뽑기 instead of 달고나. Older Koreans will argue with you about the name for an hour

I've heard 쪽자 (jjokja) down here in Busan too. Three names, one sugar lump

warm sugar foam in a plastic bag is the most dangerous street food concept I've heard

↳

Warm sugar foam in a bag is how you get a kid who never sleeps again. I want three

a bag of hot sugar handed to a 9 year old. different times

Is this just the same baking soda trick but you stop before it sets? Trying it this weekend

Okay, doing it this weekend. If you don't hear from me, the pan won

6hanbyeol2026.10.07

Yes, melted sugar, a pinch of baking soda, and you just don't press it. Eat it fast while it's soft

5retro_ballad2026.10.07

The rock hard version you carried home was half the fun. You'd be licking it the whole walk

↳
5retro_ballad2026.10.07

Licking a rock-hard sugar disc the whole way home is my entire 1990s summary

Our school-gate snack in Vietnam was dried squid grilled on a tiny stove. The smell alone made you late for class

My mother-in-law in Busan still says 뽑기, so the name argument is real in my own family

7Dahye2026.10.07

This looks like the warm version of a cafe's honeycomb toffee. I'd eat it walking home in the cold

7Minjae2026.10.07

Ours was candy floss outside school, but this looks way better. Warm and in a bag is genius

6Mateo2026.10.07

Random fact: the dalgona from Squid Game made sellers so busy back in 2021 that some old street vendors suddenly had lines again

5Ayşe2026.10.07

Turkish school gates had pamuk şeker, cotton candy. Same sugar cloud, less danger

4Hiro_K2026.10.07

Japan has karumeyaki, basically the same baking soda sugar trick at festivals. Nice to see the Korean cousin

↳
5KasiaOP2026.10.07

Karumeyaki! I knew there had to be a Japanese version. The world loves a sugar puff

6hazel_n_honey2026.10.07

Can someone describe the soft one? More like marshmallow or more like honeycomb toffee?

↳
6hanbyeol2026.10.08

Warm it's soft and a bit chewy, then it goes crunchy like honeycomb as it cools. You have a short window

↳
5KasiaOP2026.10.08

From the photos it looks fluffy and soft, more marshmallow than toffee. I'm basing this on nothing but drooling

6Jiyul2026.10.07

This feels like a scene from an old 2000s drama, kids crowding around the seller with coins in their hand

6Minh2026.10.07

the lump in a plastic bag is so much more honest than the shape. no rules, just sugar

My school-gate snack was whatever my friend didn't finish. Very sad pretzel energy

6Yoonseo2026.10.07

Vocab: 뽑기 (ppopgi) comes from 뽑다, to pick or pull out. Because you pick the shape out without breaking it
