🌶 Hot debatesunmi said before lia kim kpop choreo was just cool dancing and after her it became a story. fair??

8DabinAm2026.10.05 18:31👁 4548💬 106♥ 63

OMG WAIT ok so EBS has this documentary series (Witnessing the Era) and the oct 4 episode was about lia kim, the 1MILLION choreographer, and sunmi said the most dramatic thing about her

"before lia kim, k-pop choreography was cool dancing. after lia kim, k-pop choreography became a story." and like... she did twice TT, ioi very very very, and the gashina finger gun!!! that finger gun has been living in my brain since forever. sunmi said she personally asked lia kim to do 24 hours bc she was sure she'd make something that fits the artist's character and not just generic cool moves. and choreographer kany said gashina is simple but you remember it right away which. yes. exactly.

the part that got me tho is lia kim talking about a 7 to 8 year slump where she put her pride aside and went to younger dancers asking to join their projects and learn from them. starting over from zero when you're already known?? no bc that's the real story here ok question for the room bc i know someone will fight me: is "before her it was just cool dancing" fair to the older gens?? or did she really turn point choreo into a whole character thing? thoughts

Point choreo is the club badge. You see it for one second and you know whose shirt it is

5Lucia2026.10.07

Same. The choreo debate is fun but that part made me tear up

4Eero2026.10.07

What do you call a choreographer who tells stories? A plot twister

4riceball992026.10.07

same question, I only found clips going around

5Kofi.A2026.10.05

As a cover dancer, her stuff is the easiest to recognize in 2 seconds and the hardest to copy with the right feeling. The gashina finger gun is simple until you see people do it without the attitude

5retro_ballad2026.10.05

Not fair to 2nd gen imo. Sorry Sorry, Gee, Abracadabra had a story and a concept too. She made it more character-driven, sure, but don't erase my childhood

↳
6Jiyul2026.10.06

Abracadabra's 시건방춤 (the "arrogant dance") literally had the attitude in its name. 2nd gen already did the move-is-the-character thing

↳
5aaaahelsinki2026.10.06

*screams in 2009* GEE HAD A WHOLE STORY

↳
5retro_ballad2026.10.06

The hand rub IS the character arc. A man apologizing with his entire wrists. Peak storytelling

↳

Both can be true. 2nd gen had concepts, she made the choreo itself carry the concept. Slightly different job

↳
6Hajun2026.10.06

Sunmi was talking about her own songs and a friend, not writing a history textbook. People take documentary soundbites way too literally

↳
8DabinOP2026.10.06

ok ok i hear u but sorry sorry was a hand rub not a whole character arc 😭 i'm not erasing anyone i swear

↳
5lyric.thief2026.10.07

2nd gen fans reading 'just cool dancing': sorry sorry sorry sorry

5Kofi.A2026.10.05

↳
5Jiseon2026.10.06

So true. Saw a cover once where every move was perfect and it still felt empty without the stare

↳

*does the finger gun at my screen* ok you're right, I look like I'm pointing at a bus

↳
5Kofi.A2026.10.06

For anyone asking, TT is kinder on the knees than it looks. Gashina is easy on the body and brutal on the face

↳
4Eero2026.10.06

Tried it in the mirror. My cat left the room. I think that counts as a review

↳
6Olu2026.10.06

Which one of hers would you start with for a cover? I want to try one this winter and have no idea where to begin

↳
8DabinOP2026.10.06

THE ATTITUDE!!! finger gun without attitude is just someone giving directions

5Chiara2026.10.06

TT, Very Very Very and 24 Hours from the same person is a crazy run. I need to find this documentary

7Minjae2026.10.06

Asking juniors if you can join their projects when you're already known... that kind of humility is why I trust her work

6hanbyeol2026.10.06

1MILLION videos were the first Korean dance content a lot of my non-kpop friends ever watched. Her name goes way beyond idol choreo here

5lol_true2026.10.06

lol true, that finger gun never left

5Sanne2026.10.06

Is the EBS episode up anywhere with English subs?

↳
3WeiLing2026.10.07

following, same question

6ppalli_ppalli2026.10.06

Vocab: 포인트 안무 (point anmu) = the signature move everyone copies. Learned it from exactly this kind of argument

↳
5Tenzin2026.10.07

And 안무가 (anmuga) for choreographer. Two words from one documentary, not bad

5Gyuwon2026.10.06

Fair. TT hands are still in my muscle memory and I've never even been that into TWICE

5Valen2026.10.06

the gashina finger gun living in my head since 2017 is so real I'm crying

4Ola2026.10.06

Which TWICE song was the first one she did?

↳
6hanbyeol2026.10.07

TT is the one most people here tie to her name. For the full list I'd check the 1MILLION credits instead of trusting the comments, me included

↳
6Olu2026.10.07

I think it was Like Ooh-Ahh? Not 100% sure, would love someone to confirm

6Dohyun2026.10.06

Point choreo as character writing makes sense to me. The move has to tell you who the person is in one second, same as a good hook

↳
6Ingrid2026.10.07

Point choreo is the club badge. You see it for one second and you know whose shirt it is

7Sebin2026.10.06

The 7 to 8 year slump is what stays with me. Going to younger dancers and asking to learn when you're already a name takes more guts than any choreo

6Lukas932026.10.06

"Before her it was just cool dancing" is the kind of line that works in a documentary and falls apart the moment you list actual 2nd gen choreo

↳
6Ioana2026.10.06

Devil's advocate: she wasn't saying nobody had concepts before, just that the choreo itself started carrying the plot. That's a narrower claim

5dadjoke_dk2026.10.06

As a ONCE I'd like to thank her for the TT pose, which I have done in every photo since 2016, including a failed passport attempt

↳
5Putri2026.10.07

Failed passport attempt has me wheezing. Did they at least let you keep the hands in frame

4Kyungmin2026.10.06

does she still choreograph for idols now or mostly run the studio?

↳
3Fahad2026.10.07

Not sure about now, but the 1MILLION channel still posts a lot of her own pieces, so I'd guess the studio keeps her pretty busy

4Arif2026.10.06

is kany the one who did the girls planet stuff?

↳
6hanbyeol2026.10.07

Not sure about that one, sorry. Better to check credits than trust a guess

5Jules2026.10.06

Gashina works because the styling and the move tell the same story. The suit, the hair, the finger gun. Everything points the same way, literally

4Doha2026.10.06

1MILLION was how I found dance covers in the first place. Huge respect for her whole team

4punsauna2026.10.06

Lia Kim didn't just make choreo, she made chore-OH-wow. I'll go

5Aisha2026.10.06

The slump part is what I'll remember. Being known and still going back to learn from younger dancers is so rare

6meh_espresso2026.10.06

Sunmi said one nice thing and the comment section instantly turned into a history exam

5snowyowl_2026.10.06

is the documentary on EBS's YouTube or only the TV?

↳
4riceball992026.10.07

same question, I only found clips going around

6ice_cold_takes2026.10.07

Not fair to 2nd gen. Very fair to 3rd gen. Both things in one sentence

↳
5tiny.tigress2026.10.07

Correct answer, everyone can go home

4Eero2026.10.07

What do you call a choreographer who tells stories? A plot twister

↳
6Tomas2026.10.07

Booo. Also I'm stealing it

5Noor2026.10.07

The documentary title "Witnessing the Era" is so dramatic but she kind of earned it

5Kasia2026.10.07

I tried the TT pose for a photo once and my friend asked if I was okay

↳

My friend asked if I was waving for help. Same energy

5Jiseon2026.10.07

A 7 year slump and she came back by learning from younger people. That's the most inspiring thing I read today

↳
5Lucia2026.10.07

Same. The choreo debate is fun but that part made me tear up

6kkt.882026.10.07

Fun fact for foreigners: 1MILLION was one of those places Korean office workers took weekend classes at, just to feel cool for an hour. Me included

↳
5nunchi_zero2026.10.07

Taking a weekend class just to feel cool for an hour is the most relatable thing in this thread

↳
7Dahye2026.10.07

Did one when I first moved to Seoul. Lasted two classes, still tell people I 'trained at 1MILLION'

4Sofia2026.10.07

she deserves this documentary, congrats to her and the whole team!!

7Haeun2026.10.07

Point choreo matters even more now because of short-form. A move has to land in a 15 second clip or it doesn't travel

5Chiara2026.10.07

Going to rewatch the TT practice video now. Strictly for research

5kiwi_savage2026.10.07

The finger gun aged better than half the songs from that year

↳
6meh_espresso2026.10.07

The finger gun outlived my ability to do it without hurting my wrist

4emoji.only2026.10.07

👉👉💥

4Taras2026.10.07

Sunmi asked her for 24 Hours and the rest is history. Or should I say the rest is choreography

7Siwoo2026.10.07

Grabs popcorn. A documentary called Witnessing the Era and the comments immediately start a generation war. Perfect content

5Oksana2026.10.07

"Before, it was cool dancing" makes me want to hum "nobody nobody but you" just to annoy everyone

6Tomas2026.10.07

Lia Kim didn't just choreograph, she directed the sequel

6Yoonseo2026.10.07

Vocab: 슬럼프 (seulleompeu) is just slump, borrowed straight from English. But 초심 (chosim), your beginner's mind, is what she went back to

7Minjae2026.10.07

The Gashina finger gun is the only choreo my mom recognizes. That's reach

*screams* the 24 hours finger point at the end, Sunmi asking her personally makes so much sense now

↳
5Kofi.A2026.10.07

The 24 Hours finger point is so underrated. Small move, says the whole song

7Junseo2026.10.07

the EBS series is called 시대의 목격자 in korean if anyone wants to search for clips, that's how i'd find it

↳
8DabinOP2026.10.08

THANK YOU this helps so much, searching 시대의 목격자 now

8Taeho2026.10.07

The fair version of Sunmi's line would be "after her, point choreo became the plot." 2nd gen had iconic moves, but they were more hooks than characters. Gashina is a person with a backstory

↳
6Lukas932026.10.07

This is a much better version of the quote. I'd sign that one

5Ignacia2026.10.07

She didn't just set the bar, she raised the barre

7Minjae2026.10.07

Seventeen has their own in-house choreo with Hoshi, so this is a fun reminder that idol dance can come from so many directions

5offside_oppa2026.10.07

Point choreo is like a goal celebration. Everyone remembers the celebration, nobody remembers the passing that built it

7Nari2026.10.07

My cousin in Busan still does the TT hands every time someone takes a photo. She's 34. Lia Kim built a national reflex

↳
5lol_true2026.10.07

lol true, national reflex

7Gaeun2026.10.07

The Gashina suit plus the finger gun is still one of the best styling and choreo matches ever. You could draw it in three lines and everyone would know

6Seoa2026.10.07

In Japan 1MILLION's videos were how a lot of dance school kids got into K-pop. Her studio was almost its own genre

6Hayoon2026.10.07

Rookies right now are growing up on her choreo videos. Whatever you think of the quote, her influence is in every new debut

↳
6Hayoon2026.10.07

Every rookie dance practice video I watch has some of her DNA in it. Whether people like the quote or not, that's the fact

5cryingagain2026.10.07

I'm crying at the slump part. Being already famous and asking younger dancers if you can join and learn? That's real humility

6devils_avocado2026.10.07

Devil's advocate the other way: maybe 2nd gen fans are mad because she's right. Abracadabra had attitude, but did it have a story?

↳
7Sebin2026.10.08

Story and attitude aren't opposites. Abracadabra told you who she was in two seconds. That's a story, just a short one

3Marta2026.10.07

Unpopular: the quote is unfair to the choreographers who never got documentaries. Lia Kim is great, but plenty of people built that era quietly

↳
5tiny.tigress2026.10.07

Unpopular but right. Documentaries make one name the face of a whole scene. Still, she earned being that face more than most

6Minh2026.10.07

The very very very choreo is the one I can still do start to finish. My body remembers it better than my phone number

6Olu2026.10.07

Newbie here, is there a playlist somewhere with her best-known choreos? I want to see the 'story' part for myself

5retro_ballad2026.10.08

As a 2nd gen fan I'm offended for exactly four seconds and then I remember I did the TT hands in every photo in 2016
