๐Ÿ”ฅA Korean guy finally figured out why his dad kept bringing home Coke serial numbers for MapleStory

7GeonwooAm2026.10.05 17:04๐Ÿ‘ 1304๐Ÿ’ฌ 29โ™ฅ 55

This one is going around Korean communities and it got me a little.

Back then, Coca-Cola cans in Korea had a serial number on the tab. You typed it into an event site, got points, and traded the points for MapleStory items. The writer says their family was seriously poor at the time. Dad's company had gone under, and he was working nights at a bar, as a waiter or the guy who pulls customers in off the street, they're not sure which. Maple cash was out of the question. Even one can of Coke wasn't easy. One day dad saw the kid typing in a code and asked what it was. The kid explained. From the next day on, every time dad came home from work he handed over a slip of paper with serial numbers written on it. Around 30 on a normal day, over 50 on a good one. The kid bought speech-bubble cash items and unlimited potions and was just happy. Years later it clicked. Dad had been going through the bar's trash after his shift, peeling off the tabs one by one and copying the numbers down by hand. The second half is a KakaoTalk they had just had with him. The writer pulled an all-nighter, heard the Coke Town BGM on YouTube, and messaged dad at 8:35 in the morning to say thanks, it must have been hard copying all those. Dad: "ใ…‹ใ…‹ใ…‹ that's just how it is." Then: "as long as you kids liked it, that's enough. now go to sleep." Meanwhile my biggest gaming sacrifice was skipping lunch for PC bang hours. What's the most dad thing your parents ever did for a game you were into?

My dad's big gaming sacrifice was letting me use the family PC until 9 instead of 8. I thought he was a hero. This man was digging through bins

Unlimited potions bought with your dad's night shift. I'd never be able to use them again, I'd just keep them in the inventory forever

For context, Coke Town was a whole event map in Maple back then, everyone my age remembers the music. Reading this as a Korean around that age hit hard

Mine bought me a pirated StarCraft CD from a street market and said it was the real one. Not the same level at all, but I think about it now

My mom once drove 40 minutes to buy a Pokemon card I wanted and I said thanks without looking up from my DS. I'm calling her tonight

Call her. The thank you still lands years later

And here I am complaining about a 6000 won battle pass

โ†ณ
6Hajun2026.10.07

Same. I put my phone down and looked at my battle pass like it owed me an apology

"that's just how it is" is the most dad sentence in any language. They do the hardest thing and describe it like taking out the trash

6Olu2026.10.05

Does anyone know if the writer showed this to the dad? I want to know what he said after reading it, probably just 'go to sleep' again

7GeonwooOP2026.10.06

The post didn't say. Honestly "go to sleep" again would be perfect

Coke Town music is in my head now. Nostalgia hit

me opening the free board for memes and getting emotionally ambushed instead

Getting emotionally ambushed on the games board is a rite of passage. Welcome

Did the codes even work if he copied them from used cans? I thought each one could only be redeemed once. Unless people just threw them out without entering

5nunchi_zero2026.10.05

The 8:35 am thank you message after an all-nighter is so real. You can't say this stuff at a normal hour, only when you're tired and the BGM is playing

6pixel_gremlin2026.10.05

I clicked expecting a funny Maple story and now I'm sitting here at my desk not okay. 50 tabs on a good day. By hand

5Gyuwon2026.10.05

โ†ณ
50xDEAD2026.10.07

Same. Some items you don't use, you just keep

6hanbyeol2026.10.05

Most people drinking Coke at a bar never cared about the codes, so the tabs just went in the trash unused. That's why it worked, and why it was so much work

โ†ณ
6Lukas932026.10.06

That makes sense. So he basically harvested every unused code in the bar. Sweet and a lot of work

5Jiseon2026.10.06

this is the most beautiful thing I've read on this board. calling my dad

5Mariela2026.10.06

Writing them by hand, 50 on a good day... I can't

8Dabin2026.10.06

the "as long as you kids liked it, that's enough" i'm sobbing in my car

7Sebin2026.10.06

He never told them. That's the part. He didn't need the credit

โ†ณ
7GeonwooOP2026.10.07

Yeah. Every night, and then he sums it up as 'that's just how it is'. That line is the whole story

5Valen2026.10.07

I'm crying at my desk. The 8:35 message and him telling the kid to go to sleep

5Kofi.A2026.10.07

This is why I can't read the games board at work anymore. Calling my dad on the way home

7Minjae2026.10.07

My dad used to wait outside the PC bang so I'd come home before dinner. Never said anything, just waited. Didn't get it back then
