Brood War pros keep losing to an AI called Pluto, and Korea is arguing whether that even counts
The hottest content on Korean StarCraft YouTube right now is apparently former Brood War pros and top ASL players getting farmed by an AI called Pluto. Inven ran a column on it, and the list of victims includes AlphaGo (the player Kim Seong-hyun, not the Go one, which is already funny), Do Jae-wook, Lim Hong-gyu and Soma.

The column's argument is basically: this isn't a fair fight, it's a weight class problem. Pluto never loses vision, never gets supply blocked, sends workers with zero delay and keeps 100% reaction speed while multitasking. Pros do multi-pronged harass specifically to make the opponent panic and misclick. Pluto doesn't panic, it just runs another calculation. They compare it to AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol, where the shock was about strategy and Go players ended up learning new moves from the AI, while in StarCraft a lot of the edge is just mechanics no human hand can do. As someone who has lost to the 1998 computer in a PC bang while eating ramyeon, I find this weirdly comforting. Thirty years later and the machine still chases your scouting worker with its entire army. But I'm not fully buying the "it doesn't count" take either. If the builds are new and the pros can't read them, that's not only APM. So which is it for you: real skill, or a calculator with a mouse? And would you watch an ASL where pros are allowed to study Pluto's builds?
