🔥Koreans hanging 10 charms off one bag is apparently ancestral

5CamilaAm2026.10.08 10:21👁 2403💬 23♥ 72

The keyring obsession in Korea is real. Bags, phones, earbud cases, everything dangles. A meme going around says it's literally in the DNA, and the receipts are pretty convincing.

In the Joseon era, people used 열쇠패 (yeolsoepae), basically a key tag, to tell their keys apart. It started out practical, metal or wood with what the key was for written on it.

Then, like every practical thing in Korea, it got decorated. People hung 별전 (byeoljeon) on them, ornamental coin charms, with silk cords. Byeoljeon apparently started as commemorative coins made while they were testing the metal content for the regular currency.

Every shape meant something. A fish for wealth, a butterfly for a happy marriage, a bat for good luck. So when someone today hangs a tiny bear, a tiny croissant and a tiny Jun photocard off one bag, that's not clutter. That's honoring tradition, and that's my defense.

I trust the meme. the meme has never lied to me (it has)

claw machine prizes are just 별전 with a worse drop rate

Joseon: key tags so you know what opens what. Me: nine plushies on the bag and I still try the wrong door

ten charms, zero keys. Joseon would be proud

ten charms and you hear someone coming from the next block. ancestral or not my ears are out

5retro_ballad2026.10.08

my bag has six charms and now I find out I'm just a Joseon household with extra steps

6hanbyeol2026.10.08

my grandmother calls fancy bag charms 노리개 (norigae, the tassel ornament worn with hanbok). same energy

the coin-testing origin sounds like a museum fun fact that got stretched a bit. would love a proper source

The key tag part sounds solid. The coin-testing bit is where I'd want a source too, and 'it's in the DNA' is a meme wearing a museum label.

my bag has seven and I still can't find my keys in it, so the tradition is intact

I tried a bag charm in 8th grade and the sound announced every late arrival to the whole class. retired it immediately

ancestral DNA or just claw machine prizes with nowhere else to live

Joseon tags told you which key opens what. Ten charms and the key is still lost at the bottom of the bag. Tradition honored, function dropped.

Ten charms isn't about finding the key, it's about the key announcing itself. Joseon doorbell, basically.

5Yasmin2026.10.08

ten charms on one bag is a squad with no subs. the keys are the goalkeeper and nobody can find him

so my fifteen plushies on a backpack in high school were heritage preservation. mom needs to hear this

5Matías2026.10.08

I put 8 pins on my gaming bag and nobody called it ancestral. in Argentina that's just clutter

Joseon key tags were so you'd find the right key. Me at midnight, bag charm shaped like ramyeon, no idea where the keys are. Tradition lives.

ten charms is just inventory management. you carry your whole loadout on the bag
